Foreign Goods: The Battle against Whitewashing and Stereotypes
Join us for an evening to celebrate the first ever collection of modern dramatic writing by British East Asian writers. The new text Foreign Goods: A Selection of Writing by British East Asian Artists features eight contemporary pieces that contribute to improving the authentic representation of British East Asian people in the theatre industry and beyond.
The book contains a mixture of full plays, short plays and monologues covering topics such as the marginalization of British East-Asian actors, difficulties the Asian diaspora experience in growing up in Britain and the struggle to debunk the East-Asian stereotype.
There will be a reading of Kathryn Golding’s Suzy Wong: Fitting in and fucking up by actress Jessica Woo and actress Julie Cheung-Inhin will perform her play No More Lotus Flower!
The performances will be followed by a panel discussion with all eight writers discussing the ups and downs of working in the theatre industry as an ethnic minority, what it means to be East Asian in the UK today and the current problems with East Asian cultural representations. This will be moderated by Wei Ming Kam.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception where the book will be available for purchase.
